Part 9: The Parable of the Mustard Seed & Other Parables

Matthew 13:31 - Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, ‘The Kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.’

The Parable of Leaven

33 Another parable spoke he unto them; ‘The Kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. 34 All these things spoke Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spoke he not unto them: 35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, ‘I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.’

Jesus Explains the Parable to His Disciples

36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, ‘Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.’ 37 He answered and said unto them, ‘He that sows the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the Kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his Kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42 and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear.

The Parable of the Treasure Hid in a Field

44 Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and bought that field.

The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price

45 Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: 48 Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. 49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, 50 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.’

51 Jesus said unto them, ‘Have you understood all these things?’ They say unto him, ‘Yes, Lord.’ 52 Then said he unto them, ‘Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the Kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.’ 53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from there.

Jesus Calms a Storm

Mark 4:35-5:43 - And the same day, when the even was come, he said unto them, ‘Let us pass over unto the other side.’ 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him as he was into the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, ‘Master, don’t you care if we perish?’

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, ‘Peace, be still.’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, ‘Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?’ 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, ‘What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’ Mark 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit

Mark 5:2 – And when he had come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, ‘What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the most high God? I adjure you by God, that you torment me not.’

8 For he said unto him, ‘Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.’ 9 And he asked him, ‘What is your name?’ And he answered, saying, ‘My name is Legion: for we are many.’ 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. 11 Now there was there near unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12 And all the devils besought him, saying, ‘Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.’

13 And with that, Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. 14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

15 And they came to Jesus, and saw him who was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. 16 And they that saw it told them how it happened to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. 17 And they asked him to depart out of their coasts.

18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. 19 However Jesus suffered him not, but said unto him, ‘Go home to your friends, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.’

20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel. 21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was near unto the sea.

Jesus Heals a Rulers Daughter & Woman’s Issue of Blood

22 And there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, 23 And besought him greatly, saying, ‘My little daughter lies at the point of death: I pray you, come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.’

24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. 25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

28 For she said, ‘If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.’ 29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’

31 And his disciples said unto him, ‘You see the multitude thronging you, and say you, Who touched me?’ 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34 And he said unto her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your plague.’ 35 While he yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, ‘Your daughter is dead: why trouble the Master any further?’ 36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he said unto the ruler of the synagogue, ‘Be not afraid, only believe.’

37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And he comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when he had come in, he said unto them, ‘Why make you this commotion, and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleeps.’ 40 And they laughed him to scorn.

But when he had put them all out, he takes the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entered in where the damsel was lying. 41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, ‘Talitha cumi’; which is, being interpreted, ‘Damsel, I say unto you, arise.’ 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them strictly that no man should know it; and commanded that they should give her something to eat.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

Matthew 9:24-34 - And when Jesus departed there, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, ‘You Son of David, have mercy on us.’ 28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus said unto them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’ They said unto him, ‘Yes, Lord.’

29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, ‘According to your faith be it unto you.’ 30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus strictly charged them, saying, ‘See that no man know it.’ 31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. 32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. 33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes marveled, saying, ‘It was never so seen in Israel.’ 34 But the Pharisees said, ‘He casts out devils through the prince of the devils.’

A Prophet is Not without Honor

Mark 6:1-6 – And he went out from there, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. 2 And when the Sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, ‘Where did this man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?’ And they were offended at him. 4 But Jesus said unto them, ‘A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.’

5 And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

The Harvest is Plentiful

Matthew 9:35-11:1 –  And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

37 Then said he unto his disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; 38 Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest.’
